Notes: the below work is a form of found poetry. I wrote it using only words and phrases that appear in authors'/artists' notes in Seasonal Spuffy posts. I tried to focus on common themes and avoid taking anything too unique, but - regardless - credit for the longer phrases I borrowed is at the bottom of the post.
Thank you: to the mods for their hard work and for hosting an extra solstice event so I could post this even after the last moment; to the lovely thewiggins, beta and friend, for useful and very quick last-minute assistance, and to everyone at Seasonal Spuffy for the memories.
Summary: Buffy is writing a poem for Spike post-series, once she knows that he survived but hesitated to contact her. This is not comics-compliant.

It's raining rarepairs!

I received two lovely Buffyverse gifts for fandomtrumpshate 2024.

gothicgrrl1976 wrote me a unique and sweet post-series Xander/Oz story in six chapters with interesting worldbuilding, Be Not Afraid. (I had asked for a pairing on the rarer side and bee references.) By the way, the Major Character Death doesn't happen during the story, but is a past canon event!

And CorinaLannister kindly remixed my story "Its Own Shape", because I think my own stories didn't nearly exhaust the potential of Willow/Katrina. The resulting oneshot, Thanks, Willow, is extremely cute and features an ace romance!

To go with the yellow-white-purple-black (*nonbinary pride flag) color scheme of the outer layer, I snuck some Gender into the patterns. They're traditional Latvian ornaments, or sometimes my stylized interpretations of them. The Sun sign was historically mostly used on women's folk costumes, while the Moon sign was for men's clothes; so I used both of them and also the star, which we might have borrowed from Finno-Ugric cultures (so from people who are free of grammatical genders). Also, the zigzag kind of combines the signs and colors of one male deity and one female deity. The other patterns are various lucky symbols.

In years past lj/dw was the fandom place to be, sadly this is no longer true. The SS mods feel it is time to “face the music” and we (as a community) have to decide what our next step should be.

Any seasonal_spuffy members here who haven't seen the latest mod post yet? It's poll time! :)

Mad respect to the mods for finding all these potential ways forward and discussing them with the members instead of letting SS quietly peter out or drop off the face of the planet the way so many comms have. Before I opened the poll, I thought going out in style was the best seasonal_spuffy could do at this point, but after reading the poll options I'm not so sure anymore. :)

* My Anya story The Balm of Amarynthia is complete as of late last night. It's 12 K words in three chapters.

* I never mentioned here that the Buffybot & Harmony AU Totally Real (Like, Really) (formerly known as "Unicorns are Totally Real") is also complete on AO3 as of late last year, in the sense that I've edited and crossposted the parts that were ready for AO3 and I think it probably works as a standalone story. It has 4 chapters and is 16 K words total. If you read it on Dreamwidth, there aren't any new chapters on AO3.

Coming out of my cage, and I've been doing just fine

The day job has been intense these past few weeks. In fannish news, I decided that maybe the reason I was struggling to write the next chapter for "Unicorns Are Totally Real" was that the main plot is largely wrapped up. So I'm crossposting the first four chapters as a complete work on AO3 with minor edits. It will have a bit of an open ending, but nevertheless one that ought to work as an ending, I believe. And then MAYBE later there will be sequels.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: "effulgent" is not the problem with William's poem

Or rather, it only becomes a problem because he tries to rhyme with it at all costs, resulting in "my heart expands, 'tis grown a bulge in't". This both awkwardly swallows a syllable and sounds like there's an erection in his heart, which I don't think was the intended effect.

Also, what the heck does he mean nothing rhymes with "gleaming". So many things rhyme with "gleaming". William, my friend, get yourself a rhyming dictionary. Even Walker's Rhyming Dictionary (1775) (which is really a reverse dictionary) would give him at least a half dozen options, I bet. An incomplete list of adequate words that rhyme with "gleaming": beaming, dreaming, screaming, seeming, steaming, streaming, teeming, and, most intriguingly, redeeming.

These lines could be just as ridiculous without the "effulgent". Allow me to demonstrate. ( Read more... )

Perhaps I'm arguing against a point that no one was making in the first place, though? The mean characters in canon pointed and laughed at "effulgent" specifically, but that may have been because it sounds (a) a tad pretentious and (b) plainly, adoringly romantic, not because it is what makes the poem technically bad. Mind, they were saying the poem was bad, and "effulgent" was the only detail they singled out.

In conclusion, William's acquaintances do not give good writing feedback.
