Valjean spent 8 chapters NOT making a decision. Relatable. There was also a unique argument against lies and an unbelievably complicated car horse rental experience. The justice system sucked. It was really a vengeance system.

I'm now officially interested in where Victor is taking the characters and ideas. If I wasn't reading, um, three? four? fics at the same time, I'd probably not stop at a chapter a day...

Valjean came to the bishop with good comic timing (the bishop's housekeeper Mme Maiglore JUST warned him about the scary ex-convict). Valjean's life was miserable, the state was badly organized, callous, and unjust. It was veritably dreadful (though I saw Victor playing the dreadfulness up, and it ruined the mood), but the more the narrator went on about how bad it is, the less interested I became. Does he think I'm slow on the uptake?
